Update Summaries:
Micronutrients, essential fatty acids and paediatric cognitive development
Speaker: Marius Smuts
The update will provide information on the effect of specific micronutrients and essential fatty acids on cognitive development, as well as on the immune system, including some updates on fatty acid metabolism and micronutrients.
Sports Nutrition

“The Sports Nutrition Working Group invite you to join us in a very “cutting edge” up-to-date workshop including the following topics:
- Optimal Nutrition in the Junior Athlete
Optimal nutrition in the junior athlete will enable the individual to play better for longer and stay mentally alert. The active child who is not getting enough energy may be tired and lethargic, struggling to maintain enjoyment in sport. We will be looking at the amount of food that is enough and practical ideas on how to include it on the run. The workshop will also address the issue of hydration and beverage choices. We will have a look at a day at the sports field and give practical ideas on competition nutrition ideas.
- We will also invite Prof Andrew Bosch to present the rugby study which he undertook early last year amongst the Springbok Sevens just prior to them leaving for the Dubai World Cup.
Psychology of food behaviour
Speakers: Annatjie Smith & Sarita Nel
This workshop held by a Dietitian who did master studies on Sensory Integration and eating; and Sensory Integration registered Occupational Therapist will bring you exciting new development and ideas on the sensory system and how this influence our world and what and how we eat. What information is available to the dietitian to look out for in this broad spectrum of clients to treat.

Speaker: Julie Thomas
Case presentations on practical in-patient nutritional management of HIV/AIDS patients in the presence and absence of ARV treatment. Case presentations are focused largely on experiences and practices pf clinical dieticians who work in a major regional KZN institution
Allergenicity of complementary foods
Speakers: Harris Steinman, Karen Horsburgh & Janice Joneja
The guidelines for introducing potentially allergenic foods into an infant's diet have recently changed significantly. Consequently there is now a great deal of uncertainly about how to implement the directives provided by consensus documents and position papers from international interest groups. This update will present the scientific basis for the changes and provide practical guidance in applying them.
